Muriel

This is a tribute to Muriel, a much loved Mum, Auntie, Grandma, Granny, Great Grandma and Mamma and will always be in our hearts.

She was born in Rotherham in 1931, the second daughter to Edward and Doris Smith after her older sister Dorothy.

She attended the County Grammar School for Girls, Rotherham gained her School Certificate. She excelled at gymnastics and her teacher wanted her to follow this up in further education. However, she was unable to do this and left school to start work at the Electricity Board in Rotherham and then Chesterfield. She also worked at Turner's Garage in Staveley (which used to be on the corner next to the church) as a petrol pump attendant and at Peabody's electrical store.

She married Gordon Barnard in 1954 and had three children - Timothy in 1955, Terence in 1958 and Susan in 1960.

She returned to work in the 70's at Fox's Greengrocers in Staveley before starting work at The Post Office Finance Department, known locally as the AGD. She worked there for 21 years before retiring in 1994 at the age of 63.

She latterly lived at Mallard Court in Staveley for nearly 30 years before moving to Markham Court at Duckmanton in 2020.

She enjoyed walking, painting, knitting and horticulture, particularly when propagating African Violets.

She had a passion for owls and her house was full of pictures and ornaments of owls of all types.

She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.
